Additionaly the ground battles are a lot more unpredictable and a lot more fun.Īnother point in xenonauts favour is the scale. It's also much more realistic and immersive. Things are a lot more tense and exciting, because your soldiers are NOT 100% save as long as they don't see the enemies first. These are really advanced alien races and they can't just call their alies ten meters away to help with those nasty units? - In Xenonauts aliens move freely around the map and engage your units, even if you can't see them. Enemies getting activated on sight, just makes no sense. I know others enjoy it but i just despise it. This is one of the things which made the battles pretty boring pretty quickly for me. Also your soldiers don't have to cuddle up to cover anymore, as long as it's between you and the enemy, it works.Īnd now the big one: Activation of Enemies. In xenonauts when an object is in the line of fire, the projectile has a chance to hit that object instead of the unit getting shot at. It's fine from a gameplay standpoint but again makes no sense. Cover in enemy unknown reduces the enemies accuracy. But too much weight and your soldier will be encumbered and loose time units.Ĭover. Additionaly to your armour and weapons slots, you also have a Belt and a Backpack to carry items as you like. It makes sense from a gameplay standpoint, but it's really gamey - In Xenonauts you equip your soldier what you like. Your soldiers can just carry a specific amount of items in addition to their weapons. And that number increases when you research and build better dropships with more space and better engines. In xenonauts your dropship can also only carry a certain amount of soldiers in the beginning. Your dropship can only carry four soldiers in the beginning and is magically able to carry more soldiers because you spent some money on the officer academy. One of my biggest problems with Xcom EU is that so much of it just feels so gamey. The first reason why i think that xenonauts is the better game is immersion. In fact i think it is a really good game, but i also think that the developers made a couple of mistakes which kept the game from becoming a great game. Now: While i will say a couple of bad things about Xcom EU i don't think it's a bad game. Mostly i think that Xenonauts is the better game and i will do my best to explain why i think that. Well, maybe the actual release, but i want to do this now so i am going to do it now. And what better time is there to compare the unofficial xcom sequel to the official xcom sequel. Simply using cover to shoot at aliens will not be enough to be successful in this game.So xenonauts, the unofficial xcom sequel, is now largely feature complete and will be released after another 2 months of polish. If you're really struggling, replay the combat missions if you're losing soldiers and try to adapt. Really, success in this game comes from being hypercritical of all of your actions, and thinking "What could I do better?" It's part of the "benefit" of playing, is sitting down and rethinking what you're doing. WTF? Just thinking about it, I actually just want to redo that mission from my earlier save and I "accidentally" took it at night to top it off. It doesn't work that way, and only the back alien is hit, leaving the one in front fine. I shoot the alien behind, thinking I'll hit both in the line. Another INSANE case, my LMG guy is sitting next to a reaper that just killed my team mate after this. So either my second grenade did no damage and also hit the "shell" or he was able to survive. My shotgun guy then shoots him pointblank. They both take away the "shell" and leave the reaper fine. Is it all fair? I threw 2 grenades at a reaper and end my turn. If the reaper was there out of my LOS, then I just wasted time pulling myself closer to that area, rather than further from an unknown danger zone. Is it though? Should I have actually checked down that corridor when I knew there were reapers on the map? Reviewing the makeup of the corridor, there were 3 different ways something could have been out of my LOS due to a door/opening on the left/right of the corridor. Then, comes out of "nowhere" and kills me. I then checked down a corridor, then ran back, with a lot of TU to back pedal away from the corridor. I can hear the repears kiling civs, but they don't come, so I know I'm about to face a zerg rush. I see evidence of a reaper to the west of me, and I hear it. My first one occurred this playthrough, at my second weaker base. A reaper mission where you have an out of place soldier that gets killed would be catastrophic. it will be hard to keep them all alive and you'll definitely lose a bunch. If you try to brute force, the first 2-5 missions are easy, but as you try to equip your troops, build living quarters, etc. I think this could hurt you learning the game though.
